Title:
Open Source Software Leading Network Change
Time:
1/11/2007 12:00 PM
Session Overview:
The Yarra Valley eLearning Community has implemented a student notebook program with over 1,200 devices.  Open source software has been a key feature of this program to:
  • reduce cost
  • reduce licensing paperwork and management
  • increase home-school links through students being able to use the same software at home
  • provide students with high levels of access to a rich suite of creative, productive and educational software titles
  • guarantee compatibility across platforms and future readability

In this session we will outline and discuss the issues involved in using open source software and demonstrate the surprisingly rich range of applications available to all schools at no cost.

Presenter Biography:
Cameron has been teaching for 17 years in both the Public and Private sectors. Teaching Physics, Science and Mathematics, as well as a stint as an Education Officer for the Faulkes Telescope Project at Swinburne University of Technology. It was during this time that Cameron observed 21st Century science first hand, convincing him that it is impossible to teach modern science without incorporating ICT at every level.

Cameron is currently the Leading Teacher - ICT Coordinator at Mooroolbark College. During the implementation of many new ICT initiatives at Mooroolbark College, Cameron has continued to explore Linux and Open Source Software. As these projects developed and issues such as sustainability in the community, long term compatibility and viability of e-solutions needed to be explored, it became apparent that Open Source Software and it's underlying ethos of openness and transparency had major ramifications for schools.

By no means a technical expert, Cameron relies heavily on the support found in online communities for the continued development of Open Source solutions, such as running his Linux laptop and believes if he can do it, anyone who can use Google and can read, can do it as well!
